Join North Star in Honoring World AIDS Day 2008

Posted on November 29th, 2008 by North Star

On December 1st, World AIDS Day will celebrate 20 years of raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. We invite you to join the North Star community in honoring World AIDS Day and the worldwide effort to help the now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children and those in our own community.

A feature has been placed on the North Star homepage with links to the World AIDS Campaign, the website HIV/AIDS resource page, and a Community Voices essay by a member of our community, Jeffrey “Jey” Gladstone, who is HIV positive, as well as in invitation to join us in a special fast on behalf of both Jeff and the wider worldwide body of our brothers and sisters who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

Analogies

Posted on November 29th, 2008 by Kim Mack

An interesting analogy has been forming in my mind lately.  It has to do with my new-found desire to live a healthier lifestyle.  I’m about 50-60 pounds overweight, but I have been for a while.  That’s not what my motivation is.  My parents are incredibly unhealthy and that unhealthy lifestyle they taught me land their elderly bodies in the hospital quite frequently, but that’s “old news.”  That’s not what my motivation is.  Driving in the car for 12 hours in October found me with severe edema upon our return.  I’ve never had it before.  It was quite alarming to me.  That’s my motivation.  But, honestly, I’m mostly a failure at this attempt.  And thus my analogy.

December 1st is World AIDS Day!

I am starting a special fast TONIGHT through tomorrow for those with HIV/AIDS

I call on those who can and are willing to participate to join me in one united fast and one united prayer that those who struggle will have the care they need—that those who struggle with addiction that led to infection may find the help they need that leads to change—and that they will want to change, that a cure will not only be discovered, but made available to all, not just the rich. I am fasting and praying that leaders across the world and our future government leaders will do more, spend more to help educate, outreach and prevent further transmission of HIV.

Here’s my story:

Sinning In Our Wishes

Posted on November 28th, 2008 by Rex

I am part of the Brady Bunch generation. I wore cuffed bell-bottoms and platform shoes. I had a leisure suit. Hip huggers with a big belt and buckle were fashionable. I had “a thing” for Greg until he got what we called, a “natural”, which for a white boy is anything but natural.

Straightspeak

Posted on November 20th, 2008 by Rex

Every once in a while, I read something that alters my worldview and challenges my prejudices. In about 1983, I read an article in Newsweek magazine about lingering racism in the form of something called “whitespeak”. The basic definition of whitespeak is what white people say when they think black people are not listening. It changed my life, because I realized that I was doing it.

I heard someone recently say the following:

“Masturbation will steal your soul.”

I agree.

And, it will “steel” your soul, harden you to spiritual things.

What do you have to say for yourself?!?

I just did a quick scan, and it turns out about 20% of my facebook friends are gay.  It’s always amusing to me to log in and see the recent updates from Mormons becoming fans of Gordon B. Hinckley or the Book of Mormon and even posting links to The Divine Institution of Marriage and pro-Proposition 8 sites while there’s a constant smattering of updates from my non-Mormon friends attending equality rallies, joining anti-hate groups, posting youtube videos taking a hard stance against the “hate-mongering” of those who supported Proposition 8, etc..  I keep to myself as much as possible.  I’m a facebook loner on the topic. :-)
